The Ultimate Guide to Calculating Cost-Per-Mile (CPM)
Guide Outline (5 Sections)
The Foundation of Freight Profitability
In commercial trucking, Cost-Per-Mile (CPM) is the absolute baseline of your business. If you do not know your exact CPM to the penny, you are underwriting blind. You cannot negotiate effectively with brokers, and you risk taking loads that actively cost you money to haul.
The formula is simple, but the execution requires discipline:
CPM = (Total Fixed Costs + Total Variable Costs) ÷ Total Loaded Miles
Fixed Costs (The Overhead)
Fixed costs are expenses you pay regardless of whether the truck moves. These include:
- Commercial insurance premiums
- Truck and trailer finance payments
- ELD subscriptions and load board access
- Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT)
Underwriting Rule: To calculate your fixed CPM, divide your total monthly fixed overhead expenses by your projected monthly odometer miles.
Variable Costs (The Operational Burn)
Variable costs only occur when the wheels are turning:
- Diesel or gasoline
- Preventative maintenance (oil, filters)
- Tire replacement reserves
- Tolls and weigh station fees
The Deadhead Trap
The most common mistake new carriers make is ignoring deadhead (empty) miles. If you drive 100 miles empty to pick up a 400-mile load, your true cost must be distributed across all 500 miles, not just the 400 loaded ones. Always factor a 10% to 15% deadhead buffer into your target rate.
